Defense Tower

The bell tower in the Basilica de Santa Maria del Pi in Barcelona was not originally part of the church. It was detached and meant to be a safe place for civilians to hide from war. The walls were so thick that the stairway to the top of the bell tower was inside the wall. Talk about thick!
