FIRST Lego League 2018Posted: November 11, 2018I volunteered again to be a photographer at the Poudre FIRST Lego League tournament in Fort Collins. I've volunteered at this even since I started college, minus the years I wasn't in Colorado. That Dog is What?!This was one of the presentations that the students made that was related to the overall challenge, into orbit. Their presentation was trying to solve loneliness in space by sending robotic dogs to astronauts. The ChallengeThe challenge was "Into Orbit". This was one of the game pieces that the students had to program a Lego robot to complete. TrophiesJust like all the other years, I took a few shots of the trophies.Practice TablesThere were practice tables set up for the students to practice and fine tune their programs before they competed. Paper CupsEvery year there is a "Core Values" project which is where the students have some task to complete without the help of their mentor. This year, they had to create the tallest structure that could hold marbles. The kids are judged on teamwork and creativity, not necessarily if they completed the challenge or not. TrollOne of the items the students were given was a troll. Likely to see how easily the kids would get distracted, it had no function to the goal of their task.So that's what NASA Stands for...This team did their presentation on sleeping in space, so it was fitting for them to have these shirts. Lego SquirtlesThe Playing FieldThe students compete on a 4x8ft playing field.VictoryI took this photo to get the kids high fiving, when I was editing, I realized the hid directly in the background in clear focus. Through the LensThere were a lot of parents and coaches recording the matches.Large CrowdEvery year the event brings quite a bit of spectators.
