This is a railroad switch. Basically the track in the center shifts into the right side if you want to go down the left path, otherwise you leave the switch in this position and you will go off to the right. The switch was an older switch, that was all mechanical. It had a giant arm, that was locked so no one could go change the tracks. I thought all of this would be computerized by now... I guess not...
