Taylor Mountain and Big John
It was a beautiful weekend for hiking. Calm weather that wasn't too hot, even at lower elevations. We didn't get up too high but stayed a little lower hoping to find some wildflowers. The Lyons area has always been good for wildflowers but we weren't sure if it was too early for that elevation. And although it was indeed early, there were still a handful of flowers on this hike at the beginning as we were hiking along the forest road. But I would not consider this a hike for wildflowers. The main trail soil conditions didn't seem right for wildflowers to thrive here. But even without the wildflowers, this was a great hike with wide open views at Big John Mountain that were perfect for eating lunch.
The last time we hiked this, forest road 3301 was open allowing us to drive up 3/4 of a mile to make the hike shorter. The gate was still closed from winter so this was a little longer of a hike than last time, but we were expecting that so it was ok.
There was only one other car when we got to the trailhead, and right as we were starting our hike that person was heading back from camping that night before. So we were the only ones up there for the majority of the hike. On our descent we came across a handful of people, but overall it was a very quiet hike. This area has a ton of small off shoot trails that we need to explore some time. But since it isn't well known, the trails a very overgrown making it a real adventure getting lost in the forest and finding your own way.

Hiking Log at Taylor Mountain
We found this hiking log the last time were were here and signed it that time and this time. We couldn't find out entry from our previous hike, but it's good to see it's still there.
Taylor Mountain Views
Taylor Mountain had ok views but it wasn't as open as we had hoped.
Taylor Mountain Summit
I got a little lower form the summit to get less obstructed views of the surrounding peaks. On my way back up I got this photo of Katie.
Mount Meeker
Mount Meeker is the tall peak in this area. Longs Peak is directly behind Meeker so it wasn't visible (even though it's taller).
Big John Mtn
The hike log at the top of Big John Mountain was a little weathered but still in good shape.
Hiking Log Location
The hiking log of Big John Mountain was in a taller rock pile than the one at Taylor Mountain.
Beautiful Lighting on Meeker
The lighting was a little harsh but it was shining perfectly on the snow capped mountains. There's only a couple months left before all the snow is melted on the tall peaks.
Big John Views
Big John Mountain had fantastic panoramic views of the peaks in the Bear Lake corridor and of the Indian Wilderness peaks. Taylor Mountain is in the foreground in this photo.
Budding Trees
I don't usually consider pine trees as being colorful, but some varieties have bright purple buds while they're growing pine cones.
Pasque
We found a handful of flowers on the main forest road at the beginning of the hike but I didn't take any photos hoping there would be more during the hike. But the soil conditions weren't right for wildflowers anywhere else. So we stopped and took some photos on the way back.
Spring Beauties
Lupin
This is the first Lupin that we've seen this year. It didn't look great in this area, but I'm sure we'll see more.
