Italy Day 6: Travels to Pompeii

Day 6 was pretty uneventful, mostly because the train to get from Florence to Pompeii was a fairly long trip (~6 hours including a stop in Naples to change trains). We started the day walking around Florence and then hopped on a train to get to Pompeii. We got to Pompeii later in the afternoon and seemed a little unsafe, so after it got dark we stayed in our hotel. We walked around the small town and had dinner, then relaxed the rest of the evening. That was by far the most relaxing day that we had done on our honeymoon.

Goodbye Florence

In the morning we had a little bit of time before our train left, so we walked around Florence a little bit. This photo is taken on the same bridge that we were on when I did night photography the night before.

I've always wanted to do this to a photo before but have never been able to find either a clear enough reflection or it just looks too weird. This is a picture of the Arno river flowing through Florence, Italy.

Young

We made it to Pompeii, but didn't go in (because it closed about an hour after we got there). We were also planning on a full day in Pompeii the next day, so we didn't want to see too much.

Plaster

These plaster statues were made by injecting plaster into air pockets in the volcanic rock when excavating Pompeii. Basically the ash covered the city, the ash hardened, then over the course of hundreds of years the bodys decomposed and left air pockets. When the archaeologists would find an air pocket they would inject it with plaster, let it set, then break away all the ash.
